Cupboard with a view

When we were little we travelled far
Though not wide
Through mountain and sea
Though not too far
In a cottage far from home
There was a cupboard on our room
With a window looking out to sea
On beaches in an estuary
Waxing and waning with the tide.

A fortress, one of many,
For adventures that took us far
Into mythical kingdoms
And magical castles
With mysteries waiting to be caught.

I think now it might be too small,
It wasn’t an adults place
Watchtower made for small adventurers
The magic wants one who still believes.

I try, fairies and bears are much more exciting than mortgages and supermarket shopping, though money seems to govern all we breathe
