This is a love poem, of a sort, but to an idealised dream of a person. The person you could never quite meet, or maybe not even entirely visualise, but is always there in dreams, slightly too far away.

Mirage

I have been walking for hours,

Or a hundred years,

I no longer know where

I have been wandering,

Or where I set forth from

So long ago.

I know the desert,

I know its tricks,

But in the city of sand,

In that great illusion,

There I stand.

I know a mirage,

when I see one,

This glittering city

that has tricked

a thousand men and women.

But he was there

and if there is a chance he was

anything but an illusion

I would walk

for another thousand years.

He was perfect

– glittering eyes and sly smile –

if there is any chance

he could ever be real…

I will walk for Millennia.
