Portcullis

There was a grand castle here once,

Men swept forth and ‘against its walls,

Again, again, across the years,

Blood, steel and sweat,

Lives washed away in the tide of battle,

Of humanity, conflict waves,

As the waters wane.

They brought cannons, in the end,

Flattened everything but the gate,

Standing alone now, gunshot scarred,

Portcullis rusting in its sheath,

A memory of what once held

Against the storms of war.

Lonely, stalwart, surrounded now

By roads and modernity,

Passers stop to stare and wonder,

Though the castle walls

Long gone, to build the

City that came, when

The age of gunpowder ruled.
