They carried her around the world, in the end,
A glittering skull that when it held life,
Had barely travelled a dozen miles
From home and family
And even in rest had lain
Unseen and quiet for so many years,
In the dust, in the ground.
She had never thought of travel,
To see the wonders of the world,
It had been a hard life,
But she had been happy,
Raised her own well,
Left her world better for her passing.
When she closed her eyes for the last time,
She had been smiling.
This new life she saw on her journey,
Across continents in her glass case,
Was an adventure,
Though her spirit clung,
Not through sadness or remorse,
But through curiosity.
A wanderlust she never had
Before she went to rest.
When they had found her
They had brought her to a library
Surrounded by knowledge
She watched these people learn,
And wondered about the world
The folk that followed hers
Spent their time within.
She saw the world,
All the wonders as her head
Travelled, her spirit soared
Through canyons and valley
Cities and oceans
That spanned the imagination.
Always coming back to rest
In the last remnant of her
Mortal shell
To look out through
Hollow sockets
At those who came
To sit and stare.
Thinking, learning, wondering,
Of new things
Yet to snare.
This is one of my Christmas poem/story series, written for the ever wonderful Noor, inspired by a short story that she wrote based around Mrs. Ples . I’ll be putting a few of these up over the next few weeks, along with some new things 🙂
